Lisen terms of service

Last updated 2026-09-08.

Lisen is a browser extension that reads the article on the current page aloud using a text-to-speech voice from Cartesia, with an API key you supply. By installing or using it you agree to these terms.

The software

Lisen is licensed to you, not sold. You may install and use it, through the Chrome Web Store, for your own personal or internal use. You may not copy, modify, reverse engineer, redistribute or resell it, or remove any notice in it, except where the law lets you regardless of these terms.

The Supreme typeface bundled with the extension is licensed separately by the Indian Type Foundry under the ITF Free Font License, which ships alongside the font file.

Your Cartesia account

Lisen does not provide speech synthesis itself. It sends the text you choose to read to Cartesia using an API key from your own Cartesia account, and Cartesia bills that account for the audio it generates.

  • You are responsible for your Cartesia account, your key, and any charges Cartesia makes for requests Lisen starts on your behalf.
  • Your use of Cartesia is governed by Cartesia's own terms and privacy policy, not by these terms. Lisen has no relationship with Cartesia beyond calling its public API with your key.
  • Keep your key private. It is stored in Chrome's extension storage on your device, which is not encrypted at rest.

Content you read

You are responsible for the pages you choose to read aloud and for the audio files you download. Only read content you are entitled to use, and respect the rights of its authors and publishers. Lisen does not review, store or transmit page content anywhere other than to Cartesia when you press play, as described in the privacy policy.

No warranty

Lisen is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. Speech synthesis, word timing and article extraction can be wrong, incomplete or unavailable. Do not rely on Lisen where an error could cause harm.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the developer of Lisen is not liable for any damages arising from your use of the extension, including charges to your Cartesia account, loss of data, or the content of pages read aloud.

Changes

Lisen may change or stop being maintained at any time. The version of these terms that applies is the one published with the extension version you have installed.
